In Imogen Parry’s first solo show she explores the terrain of dark and illusionary paradise, concentrating on the seductive aesthetic of surfaces. Her recent preoccupation with surface, both in terms of the texture of materials and reflected images on water, play on the duplicity of layers that make up the modern day conception of paradisal Western lifestyle. There are the Natural elements, for example the Arecaceae (palm trees) or cloud formations, which the artist looks at as tired symbols or motifs of paradise. Making the most of the shiny surface of photographic prints- in once instance embellishing it with crystals- the work explores how the Natural features have almost become simulacra of themselves. Dreamscapes is a self-indulgent voyage into the visual pleasure of escapism, which touches on the kitsch and science fiction. ‘Travel is the last fantasy the 21st century left us, the delusion that going somewhere helps reinvent yourself.’ – J G Ballard, Millennium People. On the opening night, Thursday 11th December 18.00-22.00, there shall be food and drinks throughout the evening. SW11 3AG. All welcome.
