MiAL’s Selection Panel A/W 2015 Collection – Max Fraser
As you may know Made in Arts London are currently gearing up for our Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection. Submissions for the collection are currently open to all University of the Arts London students and recent graduates, more information on how to submit work can be found here.
For each of our collections we invite a panel of industry experts to select our next collection. The panel is different every time and has in the past included the likes of Kathleen Soriano, Dominic Wilcox and Natalie Brett amongst others. Unlike other selection panels, our panel not only looks at every submission but also provides feedback, providing advice to those applying on their practice and submission.
This year we are proud to announce that our the first member of our selection panel is Max Fraser.
Max Fraser is a design commentator and author of several books about contemporary design. He is also the owner of independent publishing company Spotlight Press – titles include LONDON DESIGN GUIDE (published 2009, 2011, 2013 & 2015), and DEZEEN BOOK OF IDEAS (published 2011).
Starting his career as a design author, Fraser’s previous titles include the bestselling book series Design UK (2001, 2003). His publication Designers on Design (co-written with Sir Terence Conran, 2004) highlighted the world’s influential design leaders; he also wrote a monograph, BOEK, on the eminent Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek (2006), as well OFFECCT: Voices – a book about leading Swedish furniture brand OFFECCT (2010).
Max’s role as an editor naturally extends into his work as a curator of contemporary design exhibitions. Exhibitions include the successful touring exhibition Lab Craft for the Crafts Council, exploring the use of digital technologies in contemporary craft practice, and Joy of Living (parts one and two) to raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Support Centres. Until recently, Max worked as the Deputy Director of the London Design Festival, the annual citywide celebration of design.
Furthermore, Max advises and nurtures new designers, showcasing their talent at exhibitions in London, Milan, Tokyo and New York. He contributes articles and commentary to numerous magazines and newspapers and lectures internationally. He has advised on judging panels for a number of prestigious design awards.
He has also worked as a consultant for private companies and government bodies, he is an authority on contemporary design and offers insight into the current ethos and direction of design.
