MiAL x Metro Imaging Mentorship Awarded!
We are thrilled to announce the recipient of this year’s MiAL x Metro Imaging Mentorship is Sophia Wohleke!
Once again Metro Imaging had a tough job shortlisting the applications from UAL students for this year’s award. Making it to the interview stage with MiAL Coordinator Katie Hughes, Metro’s Marketing and Partnerships Manager, Kate O’Neill and Director, Steve Macleod, MA Photography student Sophia was selected to receive the ever desirable mentorship!
Working with analogue photography and developing her eye in the darkroom, Sophia has been trying to trace the disappearance of a familiar face in her Marseille neighbourhood. Monsieur Tan, a 75- year-old mechanic came over to Marseille from Cambodia in the 1970s to flee the Khmer Rouge. For years, he made his living out of an old backstreet garage fixing Vespers. Now the garage is closed and the neighbourhood is being redeveloped. Sophia’s journey takes her from France and Italy to Cambodia and the US as she wonders where he might be. Combining her aesthetic choices and artistic process she hopes to capture his imagined journey without neglecting to represent economic, political or social reality.
The opportunity of the MiAL x Metro Imaging mentorship will see Sophia now receive bespoke advice for the next twelve months as she navigates her way through her studies and into her emerging career. She will also receive £1,000 of in-house services from Metro and access to their facilities to support her continued practice and of course, will now join Made in Arts London as a one of our Artists.
Keep an eye out for Sophia Wohleke’s work which will soon be available to purchase from the Made in Arts London website.
